Epson's history spans over 100 years with a heritage that began in watch-making and led to the invention of the world's first quartz watch along with many other technology "firsts".

Epson has had a presence in Europe since the establishment of its first two European sales companies, Epson DEUTSCHLAND GmbH and Epson (UK) LTD in 1978. Since that time, consumers have consistently reacted enthusiastically to a wide range of Epson's high quality electronics products, thereby securing for Epson a prominent position in the European marketplace.

New European sales companies continued to be created throughout Europe in the following years in order to be much closer to the particular needs of various customers in their own European market regions (as well as in Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East). In addition, certain production operations for terminal printers were set up in France and England in the late 1980s.

In anticipation of the potential sweeping changes within the European market, Epson's European regional headquarters was established in Amsterdam in 1989. The new company, Epson EUROPE B.V. was given the mission of making it possible to better cope with the special challenges of the single European market. In particular, Epson EUROPE would address the need to effectively manage operations in an atmosphere of dramatic and fast-paced changes within the intensely competitive high-tech information electronics industry.

To be sure, the special needs of the European market will continue to place demands on the organization of Epson companies throughout the region. The story of the development of Epson in Europe is far from complete!
